The value of modernization

When the acquisition of a new plant is not cost-effective, modernization is a sensible alternative. With modern drives, control systems and manipulators, we convert unprofitable press plants into efficient ones.

We also optimize the machines and plants in the periphery of forging presses, such as ovens, cranes, or tool conveyors.

Which alternative is better, modernization or a new acquisition? We can help advise you through in-depth analysis that takes into account your plant condition along with your production objectives. Our experienced engineers will advise you about which measures are most beneficial.

Press Modernization Examples

Press Forge (USA)
Timet (USA)
Mattco (USA)
Villares Metals (Brazil)
Sidenor (Spain)

Presses currently in operation often have a service life of more than 30 years. Even if new presses are being built, an old press is rarely scrapped. The high standards currently required, however, can no longer be achieved with these old presses. This applies to both the products themselves as well as the production processes, documentation, and certifications.

A number of advantages could make modernization a sensible alternative:

  • Increase in plant availability
  • Reduction of non-productive times
  • Improvement of the machine parameters
  • Reduction of the operating costs
  • Reduction of the required workforce
  • Possibility of expanding the product range
  • Lower maintenance costs
  • Better spare part availability

Wepuko PAHNKE has performed successful modernizations for many of our customers. After modernization of a clients existing oil-hydraulic drive, a 99% improvement in availability was achieved along with a 30% reduction of energy consumption.

Custom solutions are provided for each of our customers unique applications. Our focus, however, is always the same: Increased efficiency, improved operating safety, and extended service life of the plants.

For hydraulic forging presses, increasing the pressure to achieve a higher press force can often be successfully implemented. By replacing or modifying mechanical parts, more precise low-maintenance guides can be installed. The service life of cylinder seals can also be extended up to 10 years.

A new, state-of-the-art electronic control system offers precise movement, operation & quality data, as well as improved availability of spare parts. By installing remote-controlled tool clamping and changing devices or faster-moving tool tables, we achieve an acceleration of the forging processes.

The modernization or expansion of forging manipulators along with lifting & rotary tables, allow for faster handling and increased output.
